The Parks and Recreation cast, sorted

Parks and Recreation is a comedy about a small government office that, against all reason, is optimistic about government. That is the show's dare. Leslie Knope believes a city can be made better by people who bother, and the series keeps testing the belief against zoning rules, town meetings and one very patient boss who would rather nothing be built at all. Most workplace comedies ask how to survive the job. This one asks what the job is for.

The central fault line is Leslie and Ron. She thinks help is a form of love, and she organizes it in binders. He thinks the best government is the smallest one, and he treats a closed door as a courtesy. They disagree about almost everything and trust each other completely, which is the show's real argument: you do not need to share a philosophy to share a purpose. What fans debate is whether Leslie's care ever tips into control.

The ensemble works because everyone wants something particular. Ann wants a home and, for a long time, someone to look after. Tom wants to be a mogul and gets closer than anyone expects. Donna wants to enjoy herself, and the show treats that as a legitimate life plan. April wants to be left alone with the right dog. Andy wants everyone to be happy and cannot always explain why. Ben and Chris arrive as outsiders and become the people who make Pawnee run.

Ben and Chris are also the show's mirror for ambition. Ben is a former boy mayor who learns to forgive himself, and Chris is a man so committed to feeling good that he treats every setback as a training opportunity. Both are earnest in ways that could be tiresome and instead turn out to be generous. Some fans think Ann gets the thinnest storyline of the core group, and the argument says something about how much the show invests in the others.

This quiz works from workplace and friendship choices rather than catchphrases. You will be asked what you would do when a friend needs help, when a public event goes sideways, when you can run for something or run from it. Each answer points toward the character who would most likely make the same call, and the highest total wins.
